Linehan Scholars' Experience

Scholars gain an understanding and vocabulary of form, content and process across art disciplines. Each semester scholars attend special cultural events, from museum exhibits to theatre, dance and music performances, in venues from Washington, D.C., to New York. Whether the event includes a trip to the Whitney Museum in New York, an off-Broadway play, a dance production at the Kennedy Center or a trip to the Baltimore Opera, scholars are viewing and discussing the academic and artistic issues of today's art world.

In addition, students participate in monthly salons where they share their ongoing works-in-progress with each other. The supportive and engaging environment provides useful feedback and gives students opportunities for further networking and understanding of each others' disciplines. Scholars may apply to live in a cohesive and lively community of student artists from all fields. Participants share a number of activities, including community service, trips, gatherings and collective art-making.

In Their Own Words

Kevin James
"The opportunities given to me as a scholar are incredible. On nearly a weekly basis I am offered tickets to concerts, plays, lectures. To be a scholar here focuses your effort on the university. At UMBC I have the ability to research being an artist, to explore the creative potential in art. I love the 'field trips' that are planned for us. Once a semester we can take a break from organizing our thoughts and go on a day trip to New York, see a show, relax in central park. It's wonderful."
