Linehan Artist Scholars Program

In Their Own Words

Kevin James, Theatre
I came to UMBC because of the Linehan Artist Program. I specifically remember my guidance counselor pulling out a slip of paper and saying, "Kevin you may be able to get some money for acting!"

At UMBC I have the ability to research being an artist, to explore the creative potential in art. Research is prized not only by scientists; it allows the artist to experiment in the very same sense, to find what works and what does not work. At UMBC I am encouraged to research and therefore grow.

Each teacher has given me tools for my craft as well as life. During the rehearsal process our professors explore the play with us, to find some conclusion, to make some statement with the play.

The opportunities given to me as a scholar are incredible. On nearly a weekly basis I am offered tickets to concerts, plays, lectures. I love the "field trips" that are planned for us. Once a semester we can take a break from organizing our thoughts and go on a day trip to New York, see a show, relax in Central Park. It's wonderful. To be a scholar here focuses your effort on the university.

Alan Kreizenbeck, director of the Linehan Artist Scholars Program
Linehan Artist Scholars are UMBC's Renaissance students. They are actively inquisitive, possessing a passion for knowledge and experience that does not recognize the often artificially imposed borders between mathematics and art, politics and performance or science and social action. Linehan scholars' enthusiasm is infective, challenging other students—and faculty—to do their very best.

The Linehan program is a dynamic entity; as the program evolves, many new and stimulating opportunities to explore, develop and grow will become available. For example, there are opportunities to get to know and collaborate with other Linehan scholars by living on the visual and performing arts living-learning community in Harbor Hall. Seminars on specific performance genres, excursions to participate in artistic activities, and post-performance discussions are important for all Linehan scholars. I will be involved in guiding students through the myriad of opportunities that this campus and program offer—study aboard, internships, preparation for advanced training and service learning.
