Meyerhoff Scholars' Experience

Mentoring is a critical component of the Meyerhoff Scholar's experience. The program assists scholars with developing relationships with leading scientists, physicians and engineers in the larger community. In addition to their departmental academic advisor, Meyerhoff Scholars receive counseling and advising from Meyerhoff staff. Rather than fostering a climate of competition, the program stresses cooperation and collaboration. Scholars rely on mutual support and continually challenge each other to do more. Meyerhoff Scholars conduct research early on in order to gain hands-on experience and to develop a clearer understanding of what studying science entails. Scholars perform research at top research institutions in the United States and abroad.

In Their Own Words

Isaac Matthews
ÒWhat made me feel at ease with my choice of UMBC's Meyerhoff Scholars program was when I came into the Meyerhoff office and basically laid out my lifelong dreams to staff members. They listened attentively, mapped out a plan for me right on the spot and now I am faced with great choices of graduate schools that I was hoping to have as a high school senior. I have been prepared academically and professionally to make a positive impact on whatever field I choose to select as a career. Even more important is that 'select' implies choices; my preparation gives me many choices for the future.Ó
