Checklist for College Search Process

Junior Year

October
  [  ]   Take PSAT/NMSQT to prepare for SAT and to be eligible for National Merit Scholarship competition.
January
  [  ]   Begin to think about which colleges you'd like to explore.
February
  [  ]   Meet with your school counselor to begin preparing a list of colleges to explore.
  [  ]   Sign up for March SAT.
  [  ]   Begin to prepare for SAT or ACT.
March
  [  ]   Write to colleges on your list and evaluate the literature sent to you. It's time to take the SAT.
  [  ]   Attend UMBC's Just for Juniors (and Sophomores too) visit day.
April
  [  ]   When selecting your senior courses, be sure to continue to challenge yourself. And plan accordingly; a rigorous, challenging curriculum is important for competitive admissions.
  [  ]   Continue to evaluate colleges.
  [  ]   Attend a college fair to get more information about colleges on your list.
May
  [  ]   Take advanced placement exams (if appropriate).
  [  ]   Plan visits to colleges during the summer.
July – August
  [  ]   Visit colleges and take campus tours.
  [  ]   Attend a UMBC Summer Preview Day.


Senior Year

September
  [  ]   Sign up for October SAT or October ACT.
  [  ]   Begin to gather information for applications.
  [  ]   Meet with your school counselor to review your list of colleges.
  [  ]   Plan visits to colleges (if you didn't get to them during the summer or if you want to return to a campus for a second time.)
  [  ]   Attend a UMBC Visit Day for information sessions and tours.
October
  [  ]   Attend a college fair to investigate further those colleges to which you will probably apply.
  [  ]   Start sending your applications. UMBC's early action deadline is November 1 and the regular decision deadline is February 1.
  [  ]   Review guidelines and application process for scholarship programs, including the Scholars Programs at UMBC.
November
  [  ]   Obtain your Financial Aid Form or Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) from your school counselor. UMBC's priority deadline is February 15.
December
  [  ]   Begin reviewing notification of admission decisions. UMBC early action candidates receive notification in December.
February, March and April
  [  ]   Attend a college fair to investigate further those colleges to which you will probably apply.
  [  ]   Participate in events and activities for newly admitted students.
Before May 1
  [  ]   Decide on the one college that you will attend. Send in your tuition and housing (if appropriate) deposits.
June
  [  ]   Request that your counselor send your final transcript to the college you will attend.
  [  ]   Look for information from the college about housing, roommate(s), orientation, course selection, etc.
July – September
  [  ]   Pack for college. Leave home for your new home and have a great freshman year!
