This project involves low-cost home automation. The idea is to develop a single, small, reconfigurable module that can be inserted into appliances to add functions and features such as simple communication abilities to a base computer or between appliances. Besides customizing a home for convenience, what intrigues me about the project is the potential to create a home that can be customized to assist the disabled or the elderly.
My research team, all undergraduates, got the idea for this project from our advisor in computer engineering, Dr. Plusquellic. Last year, we did a project on wearable computers, and some of us enjoyed it so much that we wanted to continue. We're supported in our work by funding UMBC has specifically for undergraduate research. I'm proud to be at a school that supports undergraduate research so extensively. Attention to undergraduates was one of the reasons I chose UMBC. The reality has surpassed my expectations.
