I am fascinated by native cultures. My research is on Alaskan Aleut Creoles. Few scholars have studied the lives of the half- Russian, half-Aleut natives, let alone how they perceived and conceptualized their mixed-race identities. To conduct my research, I spent time at the National Archives and UMBC's library to access journals of various explorers, ethnographies and church records.
I'm not only interested in Native-American cultures, but in indigenous cultures in general. I was part of the first group of students to study abroad in Sikkim, North India. We took classes in religion, meditation, anthropology and culture. I traveled north to stay with a tribal community called the Lepchas for 15 days, meeting, interviewing and witnessing the rituals of the Lepcha shamans. I can honestly say that I have never felt more alive than when I was in the field. It was then that I made the decision to be a socio-cultural anthropologist.
