New Programs for Fall 2007
Media and Communication Studies Major
As communication becomes increasingly digital, interactive and pervasive, knowledge of new forms of
media technology is essential. In courses such as American studies, visual arts, English, modern
languages and linguistics, you'll gain a critical understanding of the media and how to use relevant
new technologies to communicate effectively. Internships and capstone projects will introduce you to
the worlds of radio, television, print and web journalism; public relations and advertising; non-profit
policy work and advocacy; as well as careers in education, health and administration.

Gender and Women's Studies Major
Students majoring in gender and women's studies will examine women's achievements from a historical
and cultural perspective; explore the cultural definitions of feminine behavior compared to the realities
of women's lives; and consider how class, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and age shape women's
experiences. Gender and women's studies students enter careers in business, education, public service,
healthcare, social services, law, politics and news media. Students can also choose gender and women's
studies as a minor or certificate. Visit www.umbc.edu/wmstudies for information.
Game Development Track
The video game industry has become big business; and the Baltimore/Washington region is ranked third in the
number of computer game companies nationally. Based on employer feedback, UMBC created a game development
track for students pursuing a B.S. degree in computer science. The program includes courses in game theory,
graphics, game engines and scripting, artificial intelligence and software engineering.

Public Health Track
UMBC's Health Administration and Policy Program (HAPP) now offers a track in public health. HAPP is
designed for career-oriented students who recognize U.S. healthcare as a major public concern and who
are looking for a career in public planning, research or policy positions. The new focus in public health
allows students to combine an interest in the natural sciences as part of their program requirements.
