Ancient Studies

Department Facts

By studying the civilizations of the ancient Mediterranean world, students discover the basis of humanistic learning, attitudes and values in the Western world, and develop a sense of the importance of the past.

Students majoring in ancient studies take a balanced group of courses that investigate the ancient world through the disciplines of language, literature, history and archaeology. Ancient studies students unearth history. In addition to the major in ancient studies, interested students can pursue a B.A./ M.A. program in historical studies, which emphasizes ancient history.

Activities outside the classroom enrich the ancient studies students' learning experience. Scholarships are available for ancient studies majors to participate in archaeological excavations, study- abroad programs and trips sponsored by the ancient studies department. Recent travel opportunities sponsored by the department include archaeological work in Israel and study in England, France, Italy and Greece. Students are encouraged to join the Ancient Studies Club, which offers faculty and students opportunities to interact outside of class.

A major in ancient studies from UMBC can lead to careers in field archaeology, museum curating or teaching. The major provides excellent liberal arts preparation for many professional fields, including law and medicine. Graduates are well-prepared for advanced studies in classics, archaeology and ancient history.
