Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Department Facts

The biochemistry and molecular biology program draws from both the Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, as well as specific biochemistry courses. The program provides a broad background in the physical and life sciences. It is suitable for students planning careers in laboratory research or further training in graduate, medical or other biomedical professional programs such as medicine, dentistry or medical technology.

Students take four or five hands-on laboratory courses. They have the opportunity to conduct independent research in faculty labs at UMBC, as well as at nearby institutions such as the National Institutes of Health and the Walter Reed Medical Center. Special programs and fellowships have placed biochemistry students in labs of eminent scientists nationally and internationally.

Approximately 60 percent of all UMBC biochemistry graduates continue their education in graduate and other professional programs, including those at such highly competitive schools as Yale, Princeton, Johns Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon, Stanford, Washington University, University of California-San Francisco and Cal Tech. Graduates are hired by organizations such as the National Cancer Institute, Hoffmann LaRoche, Procter and Gamble, Smith Kline Beecham and the FDA.
