Education

Department Facts

UMBC's education department offers teacher candidates the opportunity to combine an academic major in their area of interest with the education certification area of their choice. That means that students pursue a major, such as in the sciences or English, while at the same time preparing for their certificate in either early childhood, elementary, secondary, ESOL/Bilingual or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education).

The certificate programs have been evaluated and approved by a team from the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. Students who complete one or more of the programs are eligible for certification in more than 30 states.

The programs provide the opportunity for teacher candidates to engage in practicum experiences each semester. These diverse experiences are provided through professional development schools and other partnership arrangements with school systems in the Baltimore-Washington corridor. A number of partnerships with school districts offer students opportunities to integrate theory and practice and to learn from experienced teachers and other professionals in classrooms and other school-based settings.
