Department Facts

The English department provides students with advanced skills in written and oral communication and heightens their awareness of literature as an artistic achievement and a mirror of universal human concerns. English majors first concentrate on mastering the skills of close reading; clear, effective writing; and critical analysis. Next, students take courses that emphasize the historical development of British and American literature. Finally, they elect courses of independent study in areas of special interest.

The English department offers students numerous opportunities to gain practical experience outside the classroom. Through internships with newspapers, television, radio, agencies or businesses, students earn credits while honing communication and research skills.

Students can also join the English Council of Majors, a student-run organization that hosts literary events throughout the year. English majors with an outstanding record of academic achievement are invited to join the UMBC chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the national English honors society.

A wide variety of careers are open to English majors. UMBC graduates find employment as business executives, editors and publishers, writers and reporters at television stations and newspapers and in public relations. Many graduates teach in the school systems at the primary and secondary levels. The majority of students who go on to graduate school study literature. In addition, they study law as well as social work, education and journalism.
