In gender and women's studies, students examine women's roles, achievements, images, status and experiences from a historical and cultural perspective; they explore the relationship between cultural definitions of feminine behavior and the realities of women's lives; and they consider how class, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and age shape women's experiences. Ultimately, this critical examination leads students to understand how gender makes a difference„in the experiences of women as well as men, in the practices and institutions of human societies and in the cultural products of societies.
From more than 50 course offerings, such as Women, Gender, and IT; Black Women: Cross-cultural Perspectives; and Women and Law, students fulfill requirements for a major, minor or certificate.
Internship opportunities exist at such organizations as the Feminist Majority, the National Organization for Women, Planned Parenthood and many others, including WMST-L, the international electronic discussion forum for women's studies based at UMBC.
Areas in which students of gender and women's studies excel include: business, education, public service, the health professions, social services, law, politics and news media.
