History

Department Facts

UMBC's history department fosters students' analytical and communication skills, broadens their perspective on the past and trains them to apply knowledge and analytical skills gained through the study of history. The history department offers a Bachelor of Arts in History, minors in history and East Asian history and a combined B.A./M.A. program. To begin the B.A./M.A. program during their senior year, interested students are encouraged to apply late in their sophomore year or in their junior year.

History students enhance their classroom experience in numerous ways. They participate in internships with organizations such as the Maryland Historical Society, the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis and the Baltimore Museum of Industry, as well as other museums, archives and historical societies in the region. All history students are encouraged to participate in the Student History Council, which meets monthly for lectures and informal discussions and sponsors field trips to museums and historic sites. Qualified history majors may apply to Phi Alpha Theta, the history honor society.

The history major and minor are excellent preparation for careers in fields such as law, government service, education, communications and management, as well as for entry into graduate programs.

Students planning to become certified to teach history and social studies can pursue a specially designed course of study approved by the Maryland State Department of Education. This program, offered in conjunction with UMBC's secondary teacher education program, offers teacher certification in more than 30 states.
