Mechanical Engineering

Department Facts

The Department of Mechanical Engineering focuses on the design and production of energy-producing systems and on mechanical devices or mechanisms. These systems and mechanisms are applied to fields ranging from biology to transport systems to manufacturing.

The mechanical engineering curriculum at UMBC provides students with thorough training in mathematics, physical sciences, engineering sciences and engineering design. Mechanical engineering students gain a broad education by completing a cross section of courses in the arts and humanities, social sciences and language and culture. A five-year combined B.S./M.S. program is offered for undergraduate students who choose to take graduate-level classes in their senior year.

Mechanical engineering students participate in activities such as the Mini-Baja all-terrain vehicle competition and the Solar Splash solar-powered boat race and in several professional organizations. Professional societies include: American Society of Mechanical Engineers; Society of Automotive Engineers; American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers; National Society of Black Engineers and Society of Women Engineers. Students are also members of the UMBC chapter of Tau Beta Pi, a national engineering honor society.
