Political Science

Department Facts

The Department of Political Science offers programs of study in political science, international affairs, political thought, applied politics, legal policy, public administration and pre-law. Political science helps students think critically about politics in order to make more reasoned value choices about contemporary political issues. In addition, political science prepares students for a variety of challenging careers.

Career options can include government service, diplomacy, politics, law, teaching, journalism and business. UMBC alumni are lobbyists, public affairs officers and directors of non-profit institutions, interest groups and international organizations.

Sixty percent of political science majors go on to earn advanced degrees, over half in law. With that in mind, the Department of Political Science and the Public Policy Graduate Program offer qualified students a joint program leading to both a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Master of Policy Sciences degree.

UMBC political science students have gone on to outstanding law and graduate schools such as Yale, University of Chicago and University of Virginia, as well as all Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area schools. They have become judges, major partners in law firms, executive officers of major corporations and some hold prominent administrative positions in the government.
