The Upward Bound Mathematics and Science Program (UBMS), a federally funded TRIO program located on the Campus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, is a summer residential and academic school year program. UBMS is offered to high school students attending one of our six target schools in Baltimore City and Baltimore County in Maryland.
Our mission is to prepare income eligible students, who aspire to be first generation college graduates, for academic programs that lead to careers in fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
UBMS is designed to improve and accelerate the students’ mathematics and science skills in exciting ways… working with computers, interacting with university staff, visiting area scientific and cultural centers, and participating in research activities under the guidance of a mentor.
An organized, balanced program is offered that includes classroom and laboratory study, field site experiences, and integration of mathematics and computer components, examination of ethical issues created by scientific activity, and development of skills necessary for academic success. In addition, an emphasis is placed on the exploration of career options through interactions with role models, mentors, and participation in activities associated with a variety of scientific disciplines.
UBMS staff members assist participants by providing guidance and counseling, strengthening academic skills, and supplying an ongoing support system that nurtures high expectations and responsible behavior.
