SUMMARY:Lewis Hine in Maryland
DESCRIPTION:The Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery presents Lewis Hine in Maryland\, on display from August 24 through December 18. The exhibition will be accompanied by Lisa Oppenheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso. \nFrom 1908 to 1924\, documentary photographer Lewis Hine (American\, 1874–1940) traveled throughout the United States\, using his camera to document child labor on behalf of the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC). He photographed children working in coal mines\, cotton mills\, farms\, tenements\, and city streets. The NCLC used Hine’s photographs and eyewitness reports to support its campaigns for labor regulation and reform. His images appeared in pamphlets\, posters\, traveling exhibitions\, and lantern-slide presentations across the country. Ultimately\, these searing photographs helped shape labor legislation in the United States and established a model for documentary photography. \nIn July 1909\, Hine visited Maryland\, photographing child workers at Bottomley berry farms in Anne Arundel County and at the J. S. Farrand Packing Company in Baltimore. Drawn from UMBC’s Photography Collections\, this exhibition explores the places and people behind these photographs. A selection of Hine’s most iconic and enduring images situates his Maryland work within the broader context of his documentary project. The exhibition also examines how Hine’s photographs functioned as tools of visual persuasion\, working in tandem with captions\, pamphlets\, slogans\, and posters to shape public opinion — and ultimately legislation — regarding the changing role of children in the workforce and in American society. \nThis exhibition commemorates MD250 and the U.S. Semiquincentennial\, exploring themes foundational to the nation’s history\, including immigration and migration\, the power of documentary photographs\, and social justice. \n\nPublic Programs \nCuratorial tour and opening reception\nThursday September 17\, 5 p.m. \nPanel Discussion: Food and Labor in Maryland\nThursday October 22\, 6 p.m.\, followed by a reception\nThis event is co-organized with Department of American Studies and the Orser Center for Public Humanities at UMBC. \nClosing reception\nThursday December 3\, 6 p.m. \nAll public program are free and open to the public. \n\nLisa Oppenheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso \nLewis Hine in Maryland is accompanied by an installation of two works from artist Lisa Oppenheim’s Spine series\, in which she appropriates images by Lewis Hine from the Library of Congress. Enlarged to life size\, the photographs depict the backs of adolescent textile workers whose bodies were curved and misshapen by their labor. Oppenheim has bifurcated each image along the vertical axis of the spine\, emphasizing the physical impact of repetitive work on the body. Lisa Oppenheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso places Oppenheim’s works in dialogue with a selection of photographs from UMBC’s Lewis Hine Collection\, displayed with their versos — or backs — visible to viewers. \nIn 2023\, with support from a National Endowment for the Humanities Preservation Assistance Grant\, Special Collections staff undertook a major initiative to rehouse the Lewis Hine photographs and digitize their versos. The backs of the photographs bear captions\, annotations\, and inscriptions by Hine and others employed by the NCLC\, testifying to their use in the organization’s publications and promotional campaigns. Together\, these materials reveal the many forms of labor documented in Hine’s work and the ways that labor is imprinted upon — and remains legible within — the bodies of his subjects. \n \nLisa Oppenheim was born in 1975 in New York\, New York. She received a BA in art and semiotics from Brown University in 1998 and an MFA in film and video from Bard College in 2001. She attended the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program for studio art in 2003. Oppenheim’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at MUDAM\, The Contemporary Art Museum of Luxembourg (2025); Huis Marseille\, Amsterdam (2024)\, Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (2017)\, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland (2016). In 2014\, Oppenheim was the recipient of the AIMIA|AGO Photography Prize from the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Shpilman International Photography Prize from the Israel Museum. Her work is held in the permanent collections of The J. Paul Getty Museum\, Los Angeles\, Museum of Modern Art\, New York\, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, San Francisco\, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, New York\, Santa Barbara Museum of Art\, Santa Barbara\, Centre Georges Pompidou\, Paris\, Carnegie Museum of Art\, Pittsburgh\, among others. She lives and works in Brooklyn. \nImage: Lisa Oppenheim\, Correct posture for 4663. Need for advice of examining physician\, 2016. SUMMARY:Humanities Forum — Kim Bowes: The Economic Lives of Rome’s Ninety Percent
DESCRIPTION:Humanities Forum Lecture with Kim Bowes\nThe Economic Lives of Rome’s Ninety Percent\nThis Ancient Studies Week Lecture is part of the Fall 2026 Humanities Forum \nHow did the majority of Romans get by? What were their strategies for survival? This talk describes how the Roman world created a set of bitter challenges and opportunistic hustles for everyone from farmers and craftspeople to day laborers and slaves. Working people co-produced a consumer revolution\, making and buying everything from fine pottery to children’s toys. Many of the poorest working people lived with — but not on — wages. And Romans’ most daunting challenge was the struggle to save. These economies of survival were shared by a wide swath of people\, blurring the lines between genders\, ages\, and legal status. \n\nKim Bowes is BFC Presidential Professor of Classical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Author of Surviving Rome: The Economic Lives of the Ninety Percent (Princeton)\, her research and field projects address the economic lives of working people. Her work has been supported by the National Science Foundation\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, and the Guggenheim Foundation. \n\nAdmission is free. \n\nThis annual lecture is organized by the Department of Ancient Studies and part of the Dresher Center’s Humanities Forum. \n\nUMBC is committed to creating an accessible and inclusive environment for all faculty\, staff\, students\, and visitors. To request additional accessibility accommodations\, please contact us at least five business days in advance at dreshercenter@umbc.edu. \n

SUMMARY:Lewis Hine in Maryland — Panel Discussion: Food and Labor in Maryland
DESCRIPTION:The Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery presents a Panel Discussion on Food and Labor in Maryland in conjunction with the exhibition Lewis Hine in Maryland\, on display through December 18. \nThis event is co-organized with the Department of American Studies and the Orser Center for Public Humanities. \n\nVisitor Information \nAdmission to the panel discussion and to the exhibition is free. For driving directions and parking information\, please visit here. \n\nImage: Lewis Wickes Hine\, This little six-year helper in Rock Creek berry field\, near Baltimore\, Md.\, was working hard\, 1909. SUMMARY:Arts Alumni Spotlight: Hannah Kelly and Franki Graham
DESCRIPTION:Two accomplished UMBC arts alumni\, Hannah Kelly ’17\, theatre and Franki Graham ’13\, dance\, will tell us about the trajectories of their respective careers since graduating from UMBC. \nHannah Kelly will tell us about the path of her acting career after graduating from UMBC with a B.F.A. and creating a work/life balance: having a fulfilling acting career and starting a family\, spending time with loved ones\, and traveling. Finding the balance in life is something that is important to her\, especially in a career that is known to take a huge toll physically\, mentally\, and financially. Kelly’s philosophy: life enriches art\, life informs your art. Kelly had her first professional role in 2018 at Everyman Theatre and became a Resident Company Member at Everyman Theatre in 2019. Kelly has been in many professional productions in and around Baltimore throughout her career\, most recently: Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?\, And Then There Were None\, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. You can see her perform next in The Mirror Crack’d at Everyman from November 29 to December 30. When not acting\, Kelly cares for her 5 month old daughter\, Eleanor\, owns a floral company\, Charmed Florals\, and works as an installation manager for a sign company. \nFranki Graham will explore how her roles as an artist\, educator\, administrator\, and arts leader have mutually reinforced each other and created unique career opportunities. Her connections within the dance community have opened unexpected doors\, and her curiosity and willingness to explore different avenues in the field continues to serve her. Grahams’s career has been non-linear\, each role giving a new opportunity to provide meaning and make an impact. Graham is a dance artist\, educator\, program administrator and director in Baltimore\, Maryland. Currently serving as the Dance Department Chair and Director for the Peabody Institute Preparatory Program since 2022\, Graham has spent her career using dance as the medium to transform lives and build community. After earning a B.A. in Dance as a Linehan Artist Scholar\, she earned an M.A. in Dance Performance at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London\, England as a Leverhulme Scholar\, which launched a professional performing career. Graham founded and directed a dance company with artist Jeanna Riscigno from 2017–20\, called LucidBeings Dance\, that performed across the DMV and was a catalyst for creative work. As an educator\, Graham has held roles in the Anne Arundel County Public Schools System\, within non-profit organizations\, as an adjunct professor at UMBC\, a master teacher and consultant for the Maryland Centers for Creative Classrooms program and served as a Board Member for the Maryland Dance Education Association. Graham is a certified Functional Awareness movement educator. \nThis event is presented by the Center for Innovation\, Research\, and Creativity in the Arts (CIRCA). \n\nAdmission is free. \nThe event will begin at noon\, but registrants can arrive at 11:45 a.m. for a free lunch with dietary options. If you plan to arrive early for the lunch\, please r.s.v.p. by October 22. \n\nThis event is open for full participation by all individuals regardless of race\, color\, religion\, sex\, national origin\, or any other protected category under applicable federal law\, state law\, and the University’s nondiscrimination policy. \n
