UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski Receives Honorary Degree from Harvard

UMBC President Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, is among 10 national and world leaders recognized with honorary degrees at Harvard University’s Commencement exercises in Cambridge, Massachusetts today.

Hrabowski, who has served as UMBC’s president since 1992, received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Harvard in recognition of his inspirational leadership of UMBC’s rise as a new model for American higher education and a premier training ground for the next generation of researchers and scholars. Harvard President Drew Gilpin Faust hailed Hrabowski as “a galvanic force in his university’s ascent.”

Among the other honorands at Harvard this year are retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice David H. Souter, former Howard Hughes Medical Institute President Thomas Cech and actress Meryl Streep.

“The respect our colleagues at Harvard have for UMBC as a research university is clear,” Hrabowski said. “This honor reflects on the work of a campus community that celebrates the life of the mind and believes that students from all backgrounds will excel when expected to do so and when given support.” UMBC consistently sends its graduates on to graduate and professional programs and post-doctoral fellowships at Harvard in fields ranging from medicine and science to law and public policy.

UMBC College Cricket Team Ranked #3 in U.S.

For many players on the UMBC Cricket Club, the sport runs in their blood. That passion, combined with the team’s motivation and strength, has helped them achieve a ranking of third in the nation by American College Cricket.

“It feels great to know that the hard work we have put in as a group over the years has finally paid off,” said President Anand Patel ’10 M.S., mechanical engineering.

The UMBC Cricket Club, also known as 22 Yards, was formed by cricket enthusiasts in 2004 and now has nearly 150 members. The game, which first originated in southern England in the 16th century, is similar to baseball with each team consisting of 11 players using a bat-and-ball method. UMBC’s team was recognized by the Sports Club Council in 2005 and is now a member of the Washington Metropolitan Cricket Board (WMCB), an organized Cricket League that follows standards set by the Marylebone Cricket Club.

UMBC Joins The Common Application

Beginning this Fall, students applying to UMBC for the Fall 2011 term will be able to use The Common Application. UMBC is one of 400 institutions from across the country that utilize The Common Application, and the first public university in Maryland to do so.

The Common Application is a not-for-profit organization that serves students and member institutions by providing a single admission application – online and in print – that students may submit to any of its member institutions. Once completed, copies of the Application for Undergraduate Admission can be sent to any number of participating colleges. The same is true of the School Report, Midyear Report, Final Report and Teacher Evaluation forms. This allows you to spend less time on the busywork of applying for admission, and more time on what's really important: college research, visits, essay writing, and senior year coursework. Last year almost 1.4 million applications were submitted via the Common App Online.
