On weekday programs, students have the opportunity to sit-in on class or two of their choice to get the full UMBC experience. Student-guided tours are also provided.

This season's remaining Visit Days are scheduled for Friday, November 19 and Friday, December 3. Register today!

UMBC Alums Help Team USA Win World Lacrosse Championship

Drew Westervelt '07 and Brendan Mundorf '06 recently played on Team USA, winners of the World Lacrosse tournament.

A UMBC lacrosse alumnus has been named to the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) All-World team. Brendan Mundorf '06, sociology, scored two goals against Canada in the FIL championship game, and scored a total of 17 goals in the six-game tournament. Team USA earned the World Lacrosse title.

Mundorf had the fourth most productive freshman season in the history of UMBC's Division I lacrosse history. He also received All City-County honors from the Baltimore Sun during his senior season.

Drew Westervelt '07, interdisciplinary studies, who is also a former member of the UMBC lacrosse team, scored 12 goals in six games with Team USA. Westervelt is a Baltimore Sun All Metro selection, and was co-player of the year in Harford County in 2003.

“It's absolutely fantastic,” said Don Zimmerman, head coach of the men's lacrosse program. “It is one thing to have one player to represent UMBC on a national team, but have two is extraordinary. I couldn't ask for two better alums to represent us. When they were here they were leaders. They had great attitudes and worked hard.”

Mundorf and Westervelt, who currently play for the Denver Outlaws, will compete for a Major Lacrosse League title this month.

SPEAKING 7:00PM - 8:00PM in the Lecture Hall 2 (Meyerhoff Chemistry Building)
RECEPTION & BOOK SIGNING 8:00PM - 9:00PM in the library gallery

UMBC’s summer reading connects new freshmen and transfer students with other students, and with faculty and staff members, at the start of the academic year. The New Student Book Experience provides an intellectually stimulating interaction that welcomes new students into the UMBC community. Small-group discussions for all entering students are facilitated by UMBC faculty and staff. These discussions offer a taste of the kind of discussion found in many courses. This experience puts everyone on equal ground at the beginning of the year. It allows for ideas to be shared and related back to a common source so that different interpretations may be thoroughly examined and discussed. The benefits of participating in the New Student Book Experience include:

1. The opportunity to participate in a Essay Contest.
2. Reading and discussion that is good preparation for English 100, which uses the book in assignments throughout the semester.
3. Related campus-wide lectures throughout the year
4. Preparation for other classes, which discuss topics addressed by the book.

UMBC organizes international contemporary music festival.

Contemporary musicians from around the globe come to UMBC October 27-30 for Livewire, a festival of 21st century music. Through dozens of concerts, lecture-recitals and presentations, performers and attendees will explore new musical territory and bold new compositions. Musicians will premiere, perform and discuss new works from around the world.

“This is a celebration of the vast creative force that has emerged in the last decade,” said Linda Dusman, professor of music and Livewire organizer.

The festival program is a representation of the depth and variety of that creative force. Featured performers include the Ruckus ensemble, the Damocles Trio, the Hoffmann/Goldstein Duo, the Synchronous Trio and UMBC faculty Matthew Belzer, Lisa Cella, Tom Goldstein, Gita Ladd, Maria Lambros, E. Michael Richards and Airi Yoshioka.

Livewire begins with a student concert, Wednesday, October 27, at noon in the Fine Arts Recital Hall. “UMBC students are very involved in contemporary music-making,” said Dusman.

Livewire is presented by the UMBC Department of Music. For the complete schedule of events, visit www.umbc.edu/blogs/music/livewire/.

General admission to the concerts is $10, $5 for seniors or free with a student ID or UMBC ID. For more information, call 410-455-2942 or visit www.umbc.edu/arts.
