Prove It! Campaign Establishes New Green Space on Campus

The 2008-09 UMBC Prove It! Campaign, a UMBC Student Government Association (SGA) initiative, provided $50,000 for a new Green Space, located near the entrance of the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture at the Fine Arts building and Lot 16 - a highly traveled area of campus. With the help of her peers and faculty, Elani Odeyale ’09 led the Green Space initiative through the planning and construction phases.

The Prove It! contest gives students the challenge to create a novel and innovative project, service, or event on the UMBC campus that makes everyone proud to be a member of the community.

Green Space highlights UMBC’s environmental sustainable practices through its design, which includes a retaining wall to better handle storm water and run off along with flooring made of precast concrete for better water drainage. Hybrid plants and trees also shade, protect and decorate the area. The area has Wi-Fi internet access and will soon have benches and picnic tables.

Since the implementation of the space, the Prove It! concept was highlighted in a November 2008 meeting of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. It’s currently being used as a model at other national universities such as Portland State University and Towson University. And other student government associations have reached out to the SGA including Western Kentucky University and Central Connecticut State University.

Prove It! 2008-09 winners receive $50,000 to complete the project and a $5,000 reward for the winning idea. Past projects include the transformation of the Student Organizations Area in The Commons along with the investment of $45,000 into a GPS tracking system with UMBC Transit Services.

Prior to Green Space’s opening, Elani Odeyale ’09 talked about the project in process.

UMBC Chess Team Captures Pan-Am Tournament

The chess team from UMBC is back on familiar ground: The summit of the college chess world. And this time, UMBC stands alone.

Capping a near-flawless performance over the past four days at the tournament in South Padre Island, Texas, the Retrievers topped a team from the University of Texas-Brownsville to secure the title outright for the first time since 2005.

UMBC Chess Team Stands Alone Atop World of Collegiate Chess The Retrievers take all six matches in capturing record ninth title at Pan American Intercollegiate Chess Championship

The win completed a perfect 6-0 match record for the tournament, known as the “World Series of college chess.” UMBC’s dominant performance is all the more impressive given the high quality of the 28-team field this year, said Alan Sherman, director of the school’s chess program.

The performance is an upgrade over 2008, when UMBC shared the title with a University of Texas-Dallas team that had been on a two-year Pan-Am win streak.

Gov. O’Malley Appoints UMBC’s Collin Wojciechowski as Student Regent

Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley has appointed UMBC sophomore Collin Wojciechowski ’13, political science and media and communication studies, as 2011-12 student regent for the University System of Maryland (USM). Wojciechowski’s one-year term on the Board of Regents, which governs the USM, will begin July 1, 2011.

Wojciechowski is a Sondheim Public Affairs Scholar and director of the Office of Government and Community Affairs for the UMBC Student Government Association (SGA). He previously served as the student member of the Anne Arundel County Public Schools Board of Education where, he says, “I learned how to effectively communicate my views, prioritize goals and work collaboratively.”

That experience propelled his interest in education policy, and he applied for the student regent position with encouragement from SGA President Yasmin Karimian, former USM Student Regent Josh Michael and UMBC Assistant Director of Student Life David Hoffman. Wojciechowski sees his parents—a firefighter and a teacher—as models for serving one’s community, and he strives to follow their example. “Education is the building block of society,” he says, “and anything I can do to protect and better that institution is time well spent.”
