The Research Participation Program for the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense (USAMRICD) provides opportunities to participate in USAMRICD on-going applied research and development projects. USAMRICD is the Department of Defense’s lead laboratory for the execution of medical chemical defense research. As a subordinate element of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC), the institute conducts research involving the development, testing, and evaluation of medical counter-measures to the effects of various chemical warfare agents. Project areas include chemical, biochemical, pharmacology, molecular biology, neuroscience, toxicology, and immunology.

PROJECT DETAILS

Five appointments are available at USAMRICD, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.

These appointments include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Determine basic mechanisms of action as well as applied studies, via in vivo pharmacology and toxicology experiments, in evaluating and developing pretreatment/treatment regimes and antidotes for chemical surety material and the basic mechanisms of stress.
- electroencephalographic (EEG) recording, chronic blood sampling, cannulation for in vivo drug infusions
- Collect and prepare samples
- Perform behavioral tests of animal subjects and learn to use state-of-the-art automated imaging programs for behavioral assessment.
- Prepare routine drug solutions and prepare the laboratory for upcoming experiments and maintain laboratory in an orderly fashion.
- Perform routine analysis of EEG data; tabulate and summarize data using spreadsheets; perform detailed statistical analysis (parametric and/or non-parametric) of grouped data; prepare tables/graphs of data.
- Prepare detailed methods and results sections of experiments for publication in scientific journals.
- Maintain and order laboratory chemicals and supplies.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should be pursuing a Bachelor’s in Neuroscience or related discipline. Other applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The program is open to all qualified U.S. citizens without regard to race, sex, religion, color, age, physical or mental disability, national origin, or status as a Vietnam era or disabled veteran.

The participants will be selected based on academic records, recommendations, applied research interests and compatibility of background with applied research programs and projects at USAMRICD and/or the host installation.

The initial appointment is for one year. The appointment is part-time at USAMRICD.
