Age With Rage

Kavan Peterson, a crack writer and one of the driving forces behind this blog turned the spotlight in this provocative piece on the emerging power of the Aging Services sector of the American economy.

Aging Industries Ranked Among Most Lucrative Markets For Making Millions

Kavan works with us at the Erickson School and we are poised, IMHO, to make history. From its home-base on the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) campus, the school will, in short order, have influence in every corner of the nation. Our school offers opportunities for incoming freshmen, transfer students, graduate students and people working in the field who seek premier Executive Education coursework. And yes we also have plans for world domination.

Great faculty, great staff, great campus, we are all about Changing Aging.

I have mixed feelings about articles discussing opportunities to make money in the boomer/aging marketplace. I feel privileged to have had the good fortune to choose this broad area as my career/business in advance of the “age wave”. However, I sometimes feel that all of the press is simply attracting more money and energy to strengthening a system of products and services that are in opposition to thought provoking conversations we have at the Erickson School/UMBC. It seems that the when people/press discuss capitalizing on this trend, the discussion revolves around buying a “traditional” home care franchise, developing anti-aging products, or a billion dollar acquisition of a nursing/assisted/housing chain.

I sometimes feel that I should be more excited when high finance is recognizing our “industry” and potentially bringing better wages, consumer awareness, and talent to this area. However, I rarely hear discussion related to change in these transactions. An innovative nursing home turnaround usually involves installing flat panel tvs in the rooms and creating a “spa like environment”. The huge investments that cosmetic companies are making to promote anti-aging products work against many of the concepts of positive culture change.

I guess the good news is this lack of creative innovation will only make it easier for innovators to distinguish themselves.

Just my $.02 - keep up the great work!

WYPR Radio 88.1 in Maryland is having a favorites of Maryland this morning. The program is airing programs that were presented previously. Dr. Bill Thomas is the highlight. It is between 9-10am today Friday, November 23!
