A Green House for Elders

Dr. Bill Thomas' innovative Green House concept to replace institutionalized nursing home care has recently been featured in The Guardian newspaper, on Talk of the Nation on NPR and The Marc Steiner Show on WEAA 88.9 FM. Below, TalkingHeadsTV has a behind-the-scenes look as Thomas discusses the Green House project with Marc Steiner.

CSI Science to Prevent Bird/Plane Accidents?

Professor of Biological Sciences Kevin Omland

<img alt="omland.jpg" src="http://www.umbc.edu/blogs/faculty_experts/omland.jpg" width="70" height="100" / align=left> The water landing of the US Airways jet on January 15 in the Hudson River is another example of the potential dangers posed by certain bird species. I am working with Smithsonian colleagues to research DNA traces from birds' collisions with planes to learn the patterns of certain bird species and how future dangerous incidents can be avoided.

Guitar Hero III has reached $1 billion in sales. To put that amazing number in perspective: in a little over a year, one video game made about 10% of the total money made on games software sales, music or U.S. movie box office for the entire year 2007.

In 2009 the World Should Resolve to...

Economics Professor Ginny McConnell

In 2009, the world should resolve to build cleaner cars. The number of gasoline-powered vehicles in use globally is forecast to nearly double by 2050. At current rates of fuel economy and gasoline use, this will dramatically increase greenhouse gas emissions at a time when we must be reducing those emissions.

The technologies to begin the transition to cleaner vehicles are just now coming on line, and they should be pursued aggressively by government policies and by private sector innovation. It is not going to easy or inexpensive to make this transition, but we need to begin in earnest in the New Year.

American Studies Professor Warren Belasco

In 2009 the world should resolve to develop a sustainable hamburger. It's clear that people in rapidly developing economies want more meat -- witness the recent fast food boom in Asia -- but it's also clear that the planet can't afford more American-style, grain-fed, high-fat burgers. So governments, the food industry and agricultural scientists need to join forces to find ways to promote animal products that won't wreck our health or the environment.

New Media Revolution?

Sociology Professor Zeynep Tufekci

New media is inextricably linked to how youth socialize, play, learn, communicate and, now, engage in politics.

However, what we have witnessed should not be interpreted as a mere result of clever and strategic deployment of a shiny new tool. President-Elect Barack Obama's campaign certainly made great use of new media format. But it's a mistake to assume that youth are ripe for plucking by whomever happens to friend them on Facebook.

New media allows youth to organize more efficiently but it cannot by itself generate interest or allegiance to a political party or philosophy; it can, however, make it easier to be part of a civic community.
