Introductory Experience Helps Students Transition into College

The First-Year Seminars at UMBC provide students with an opportunity to connect around academic topics during their first semester on campus. With nearly 20 seminars annually, students are able to enroll in courses that fit their specific interests. While these credits fulfill general education requirements, students receive much more in terms of their education.

“These seminars are designed to help you think deeply about issues such as the state of the environment, the forces impacting war and peace in modern culture and the negative impact of stereotypes as persons deal with national, ethnic, racial, and religious differences,” said Diane Lee, vice provost and dean of Undergraduate Education. “In these seminars you will engage in thoughtful discussions, authentic inquiry and meaningful exploration of ideas.”

Students enrolled in the seminars gain experience through writing, presentation, group discussions and hands-on laboratory work. Topics range from current events and society to historical analysis and mathematical computation.

Teamwork & Torque: UMBC’s SAE Baja Team Places in Top 20 Nationally

A UMBC Baja SAE team member kicks up a rooster tail of dirt during a race.

UMBC’s Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) chapter recently placed among the top 20 teams in the country in their second Baja SAE competition of the year in Burlington, Wi.

Baja SAE is an international event where student teams design, build and race an off-road vehicle. The competitions feature various tests of car performance and design as well as an endurance race. UMBC’s team has traditionally shown strength in the cost category, building high-performing cars on much lower budgets than bigger and more well-financed university teams.

At the Wisconsin event, UMBC’s team placed second in the cost category, third in suspension and traction and sixth in the drag-race style acceleration event. This year’s cars featured a redesigned gearbox which was built with the help of the Community College of Baltimore County, Catonsville’s Manufacturing Technology Program.

UMBC Baseball's Michael Pesci Named "All-Star Among Us," Wins Trip to MLB All-Star Game

Rising sophomore Michael Pesci (Parsippany, N.J./DePaul Catholic) and his sister, Christina, have been named among the 30 winners of the “All-Stars Among Us” campaign, which spotlights people who have gone above and beyond to serve their communities, Major League Baseball and People announced last week.

Nearly three-quarters of a million votes were cast by fans across the nation to select the 30 "All-Stars Among Us" winners -- one per Major League team -- out of the pool of 90 finalists who are serving as leaders within their communities. The Pescis were selected to represent the New York Yankees.

Michael is the founder of Perfect Pitch HRD Inc., a nonprofit organization which has raised $175,000 for mentally and physically handicapped children and young adults. Many former Major Leaguers have worked with the organization, including Don Larsen, who threw a perfect game in the 1956 World Series. Christina is president of Bridging the Generation Gap, an outreach organization which promotes friendship between young people and senior citizens.
