Summer Internships in Malaria Research at Johns Hopkins - Info Session Dec. 1, 2009

Each year more than 300 million malaria cases occur world-wide.

Nearly one million people die of malaria every year, most of them are children.

In Africa, malaria is responsible for one in five childhood deaths.

Are you ready to play a part in breaking the vicious cycle of this disease?

UMBC undergraduates are invited to apply for 6 exclusive internship positions with senior researchers at the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute (JHMRI).

Through this internship, you will have opportunity to take part in groundbreaking research to defeat this disease.

Projects may include research in the areas of:
Mosquito immune systems
Vector biology
Mosquito ecology using GIS technology
Development of antimalarial drugs
New malaria detection methods
Inhibition of malaria metabolism
And other topics

Student Benefits:
* Full participation as Johns Hopkins University Diversity Student Internship Program (SIP) interns (May 31 – August 6)
* Minimum $3000 stipend
*Summer housing provided by JHU
* Students will be matched with a Malaria Research Institute faculty mentor
* Students will participate in all JHMRI Vector Biology conference, Malaria Interest Group meetings, journal clubs and seminars
* Students will participate in SIP orientation, seminars, poster session, and closing events during the summer

Application Requirements:
* Students must complete the JHU SIP application available at: https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=jhu-si Completing this application will also mean that you can be considered for one of the 56 other research internship positions offered by JHU. Please note that this application requires two letters of recommendation
* Students should also submit a resume, a personal statement regarding your interest in scientific research, and the names and contact information of three references via UMBCworks.
* All application materials MUST be received by February 1, 2010.

Interested students are also encouraged to attend an Information Session regarding these internships at UC 310 on Tuesday, December 1 at 6:00 PM. Faculty from JHMRI will be available for networking and Q&A at this session.
