DAKSHINA PERFORMS OCTOBER 5 and 6

Check our upcoming events for more information.

Dakshina/Daniel Phoenix Singh Dance Company Performs October 5 and 6

Dakshina, the D.C. based dance company with a dual focus on Bharata Natyam (Classical Indian Dance) and Modern Dance performs at UMBC in the "Old" Theatre by the Commons on October 5 and 6 at 8pm.

Founded by Daniel Phoenix Singh, who graduated from UMBC in the '90's in Dance and Computer Science, Dakshina celebrates and builds upon classical dance of India and contemporary American modern dance. Over the past several years, the company has acquired many pivotal and riveting works by the late modern choreographer, Anna Sokolow.

Dakshina presents a signature program featuring Bharata Natyam, Modern Dance, and Singh's signature fusion of the two forms, and includes a Bharata Natyam group dance staged by the legendary Leela Samson, Lyric Suite, a masterpiece by renowned modern choreographer Anna Sokolow, and Vasnath, a signature fusion work by Singh.

Sarah Kaufman, the Pulitzer Prize winning dance critic of the Washington Post writes, “Few dance artists have practiced the creativity of subtraction as successfully as Anna Sokolow. The power in her works from the mid-20th century stems from a mix of space, absence, anticipation — and the sudden move that changes everything…Thanks to Singh’s efforts, and the staging by former Sokolow dancer Lorry May, we’ve seen a good handful of Sokolow pieces on local stages. Although they have all offered a testimonial to the aesthetics of simplicity, none delivers it more pungently than Lyric Suite.” Read the most recent review of Lyric Suite here.
