Summer 2011 Internships in Malaria Research

Summer Internships in Malaria Research at Johns Hopkins - Info Session Nov. 10, 2010

Each year more than 300 million malaria cases occur world-wide.

Nearly one million people die of malaria every year, most of them are children.

In Africa, malaria is responsible for one in five childhood deaths.

Are you ready to play a part in breaking the vicious cycle of this disease?

UMBC undergraduates are invited to apply for exclusive internship positions with senior researchers at the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute (JHMRI).

Through this internship, you will have opportunity to take part in groundbreaking research to defeat this disease.

Projects may include research in the areas of:
Mosquito immune systems
Vector biology
Mosquito ecology using GIS technology
Development of antimalarial drugs
New malaria detection methods
Inhibition of malaria metabolism
And other topics

Student Benefits:
• Students will be matched with a Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute faculty mentor and research project
• The internship period will be equivalent to 3-months full-time work
• Students will be paid a stipend, $3000 minimum
• Interns will be invited to participate in lab meetings, journal clubs and JHMRI seminars.
• Interns will participate in the JHSOM/JHSPH poster sessions, the week of August 5.

Application Requirements to be completed on UMBCworks:
• CV/Resume
• Personal statement addressing 1) your interest in scientific research and 2) how this experience would complement your career path.
• Names and contact information of three (3) references
• Two (2) recommendation letters addressed to JHMRI
• Official transcript
• PRIORITY DEADLINE: January 15, 2011
• REGULAR DEADLINE: February 1, 2011

Application: Program is open to all students. Underrepresented minorities are encouraged to apply.

Prospective interns must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents

Interested students are also encouraged to attend an Information Session regarding these internships on the 7th floor of the Library on Wednesday, November 10 at 6:30 PM. Faculty from JHMRI and Intern alumni will be available for networking and Q&A at this session.
