Beginning January 4, 2011, UMBC has a 2-week trial of the Accessible Archives database.

Accessible Archives contains the rich, comprehensive material found in leading historic periodicals and books. Eyewitness accounts of historical events, vivid descriptions of daily life, editorial observations, commerce as seen through advertisements, and genealogical records are available in a user-friendly online environment.

Resources include: African American Newspapers, Godey`s Lady`s Book, The Liberator, and much more.

Database Trial: American Antiquarian (AAS) Historical Periodicals Collections - ends 12/24/2010

UMBC now has trial access to the three AAS Historical Periodicals collections through Dec.24.

EBSCO has partnered with the American Antiquarian Society (AAS) to provide digital access to American periodicals published between 1691 and 1877. In total, more than 6,500 periodicals will be available, eclipsing all other online resources in this area. The collection is divided into three series:
Series 1 presents over 500 titles dating from 1691 through 1820.
On campus direct access: Series1

Series 2 presents over 1,000 titles dating from 1821 through 1837.
On campus direct access: Series 2

Series 3 presents over 1,800 titles dating from 1838 through 1852.
On campus direct access: Series 3

The databases can also be accessed through the EbscoHost platform. Access any Ebsco database, click on "Choose Databases." The three AAS databases are at the end of the list and may be searched individually or in combination.

Database Trial: World History in Video - ends 12/19/2010

UMBC now has trial access to World History in Video. The trial runs through December 19, 2010.

World History in Video is an online collection of streaming video providing access to critically acclaimed documentaries from filmmakers worldwide. The collection includes documentaries offering a rich survey of human history from the earliest civilizations to the fall of the Berlin Wall. World History in Video is truly global in scope, covering Africa and the Americas, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Oceania.

Included in World History in Video are many of the documentaries most frequently used today in university-level classes teaching world history, ancient history, Western civilization, European history, regional history, and documentary film—videos from the BBC, PBS, and other leading independent providers worldwide.

Unfortunately there is a conflict between databases using Java or Flash and the Virtual Private Network (vpn) software needed for off-campus viewing, so this database must be viewed on campus. Any computer on campus or using the wifi connection on campus will have access.

Database Trial: Times Digital Archive

UMBC now has trial access to the Times Digital Archive. The trial runs through October 20, 2010.

The Times Digital Archive is a full-image online archive of every page published by The Times (London) from 1785-1985. The text within the images is fully searchable at the article level. Users can easily search news articles, obituaries, advertising and classifieds - virtually everything that appeared in the newspaper. Results are displayed at the article level and users may view the article - or the full page upon which it appeared.

Naxos Music Library - Database Trial

Beginning April 16, 2010, UMBC has trial access to the Naxos Music Library.

Naxos Music Library [NML] offers streaming access to more than 41,340 CDs with more than 592,600 tracks. On average, 500 new CDs are added to the library every month.

The library offers the catalogs of more than 50 classical, jazz and world music labels with more labels joining every month. Among the labels whose catalogs are included in the service are leading independent classical labels such as BIS, Chandos, CPO, Haenssler, Hungaroton, Marco Polo, Vanguard Classics, VOX, and of course Naxos. World music content is provided by ARC, Celestial Harmonies and others; and there is also jazz, film music, nostalgia, classic and contemporary rock content.

Resources offered by NML include synopses of over 700 operas, a pronunciation guide for composer and artist names and a glossary of musical terms. A comprehensive online encyclopedia of classical music is in development.

Classical Music Library is the world's largest multi-label database of Classical music recordings for listening and learning in libraries. The growing collection of 60,000-plus tracks includes recordings from the world's greatest labels including Hyperion, Bridge Records, Sanctuary Classics, Artemis-Vanguard, Hänssler Classic, Vox and many more. Coverage includes music written from the earliest times (e.g. Gregorian Chant) to the present, including many contemporary composers. GREENR - Database Trial

UMBC now has trial access to GREENR (Global Reference on the Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources).

GREENR is a new online resource that offers authoritative content on the development of emerging green technologies and discusses issues on the environment, sustainability and more.

Researchers view content in a way that resembles the Web, allowing them to easily browse to find answers. Other features include:

* Contextual multimedia, customizable journals and news and refereed case studies

British and Irish Women's Letters and Diaries includes the immediate experiences of approximately 500 women, as revealed in over 100,000 pages of diaries and letters. Particular care has been taken to index this material so that it can be searched more thoroughly than ever before. The collection now includes primary materials spanning more than 300 years. Each source has been carefully chosen using leading bibliographies. The collection also includes biographies and an extensive annotated bibliography of the sources in the database.

Database Trial: Political Science Complete

UMBC now has trial access to Political Science Complete (PSC), providing full text for more than 385 publications, and cover-to-cover indexing and abstracts for more than 800 journals, including top-ranked scholarly journals such as British Politics, Ethnopolitics and the Journal of Women, Politics & Policy. PSC has a worldwide focus, reflecting the globalization of contemporary political discourse.

UMBC now has trail access to RIPM Retrospective Index to Music Periodicals, an international, highly annotated bibliography with detailed content analysis of writings on musical history and culture between 1800 and 1950--from Beethoven to Bartok, from Berlioz to Berg, and from Schubert to Shostakovich--all provided by internationally-recognized scholars and editors.

Published under the auspices of the International Musicological Society and the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres, RIPM treats primary source material found in music periodicals published in twenty (20) countries.

5 newspapers included:

Atlanta Daily World (1931-2003) The Atlanta Daily World had the first black White House correspondent and was the first black daily in the nation in the 20th century.

The Chicago Defender (1909-1975) A leading African-American newspaper, with more than two-thirds of its readership outside Chicago.

Los Angeles Sentinel (1934-2005) The oldest and largest black newspaper in the western United States and the largest African-American owned newspaper in the U.S.

New York Amsterdam News (1922-1993) This leading Black newspaper of the 20th century reached its peak in the 1940s. The Amsterdam News was a strong advocate for the desegregation of the U.S. military during World War II, and also covered the historically important Harlem Renaissance.

Pittsburgh Courier (1911-2002) One of the most nationally circulated Black newspapers, the Courier reached its peak in the 1930s. A conservative voice in the African-American community, the Courier challenged the misrepresentation of African-Americans in the national media and advocated social reforms to advance the cause of civil rights.

Oxford African American Studies Center (Trial)

UMBC has access to the Oxford African American Studies Center until 31 January 2008.

The Oxford African American Studies Center (AASC) provides students, scholars and librarians with online access to the finest reference resources in African American studies. At its core, AASC features the new, three-volume Encyclopedia of African American History 1619-1895, published by Oxford in 2006; the three-volume Black Women in America, Second Edition, edited by Darlene Clark Hine, published in March 2005, the highly acclaimed Africana, a five-volume history of the African and African American experience.

Aluka (Trial)

UMBC has access to the Aluka database through 30 June 2008.

Aluka is an international, collaborative initiative building an online digital library of scholarly resources from and about Africa.

The Aluka website includes a wide variety of high-quality scholarly materials contributed by Aluka’s partners, ranging from archival documents, periodicals, books, reports, manuscripts, and reference works, to three-dimensional models, maps, oral histories, plant specimens, photographs, and slides.

Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (Trial)

UMBC now has a one-year trial of the UNESCO Encyclopedia of Live Support Systems (EOLSS) [select Access for Institutions in the left column to get started]. The EOLSS is an integrated compendium of twenty encyclopedias. It attempts to forge pathways between disciplines in order to show their interdependence and helps foster the transdisciplinary aspects of the relationship between nature and human society. It deals in detail with interdisciplinary and trandiscplinary subjects, but it is also disciplinary as each major core subject is covered in great depth, by world experts.

eHRAF World Cultures and eHRAF Archaeology
