IT Security Planning 12.08.09

Maryland Education Enterprise Consortium (MEEC) and JANUS Associates invite you to participate in what promises to be a very informative and thought provoking presentation.

Short Description:
How to Structure a Good Information Security Program With-Out Breaking the Bank
There have been 47 reported data breaches at educational institutions so far this year. The number of sensitive records potentially compromised is set at 971,227.

People often think that establishing an information security program is a simple task. Read a book, create some policies, buy some software, install some hardware, and VOILA! – You have a security program. In the past you could get away with that but in today’s hostile environment you are setting yourself up for problems including a potential data breach.

An information security program takes thought, implementation, and many more activities to make it successful. Too many organizations focus on the wrong elements of a program and then wonder why the results aren’t what were hoped for.

Attend the JANUS Associates seminar entitled, How to Structure a Good Information Security Program With-Out Breaking the Bank, and learn how to structure a program designed to produce results as well as how to build in the components that will ensure success and limit the potential of a disastrous event.

Target audience: IT, Legal, Privacy and Senior Administration personnel

New Learning Environments for the 21st Century
Salon F&G
Dr. Julie K. Little, Educause
Sponsored by Perceptis

As we discover more about the way that people learn, the challenge is to design inquiry-driven learning environments focused on knowledge creation while moving outside the box of four-walls to access virtual experiences and content. And, while shaped by a lifetime of technological innovation, today’s learner seamlessly moves around virtual spaces creating, sharing, and communicating; however, impulse does not translate into purpose and fluidity does not equate to literacy. How can higher education leverage our understanding of learning, the experiences of today’s learner, and emerging technologies—from wikis and blogs to social networks and cyberinfrastructure—to build learning ecologies where students are encouraged to think critically and work collaboratively and content is generated and exchanged?

Creating new learning environments that promote active learning, critical thinking, collaborative learning, and knowledge creation, and reaching and engaging today's students have been two of the five issues at the forefront of the EDUCAUSE Top Teaching and Learning Challenges Project (http://www.educause.edu/eli/challenges). During this presentation, Dr. Little will cast a spotlight on ways to engage today’s learners and prepare them to thrive in the 21st century. Activate your imagination. Join the dialogue.

Portrait of the Work at Home (WAH) Service as a Young Program
Ups and downs, lessons learned of instituting a college-wide Work-at-Home software program that offers Microsoft and Adobe to faculty and staff at Montgomery College

Imagine: Video Game Software and Hardware as School Equipment
Teaching programming in the context of video game production has recently become a way of portraying computer science in a different light. Rather than boring assignments that output text to a screen, video games offer a way for students to see, control, and design programs that are not only interesting, but cross-curricular and complex. A video game becomes a tangible product when it is used with an Xbox controller or put onto a portable media player, like the Microsoft Zune. In this session, a teacher and students from an Academy of Information Technology school (Montgomery County Public Schools) will be discussing how they have used Microsoft XNA Game Studio software, an Xbox 360, a class set of Xbox controllers, and Zune Media players to motivate students to learn computer science fundamentals. The students will present their work in the Microsoft Imagine Cup, an international software design competition, and discuss how the software and hardware has enriched their academic experience."

Partnering with an Outside Vendor to Provide a Comprehensive, Systemic Help Desk

Microsoft Agreement Review
MEEC has established a new five year agreement with Microsoft. Come and hear about the details of this agreement including additions to the current Suite of products. If you are confused, want to learn more and need to hear how the products will enhance your Microsoft experience, you will want to attend this session. Members of the MEEC negotiating and RFP team along with Microsoft representative will be on hand to answer questions.

Apple and Mobility in Education
Students are already coming to campus with mobile devices such as an iPhone, iPod touch and the magical and revolutionary iPad in hand. They’re used to gathering information on the web, getting their email, watching lectures, getting directions, or using some of the over 150,000 apps available to extend the functionality of these devices.

Now they can learn anytime and anywhere, too. As educators all over the world are discovering, mobile learning works. Students devour engaging, customized curricula when it’s delivered on the iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. It’s a familiar and essential part of their lives. Audio and video podcasts let students study at their own pace, wherever and whenever they want.

Security Assessment and Advisory Services Session
MEEC has established a contractual vehicle through which member institutions can procure IT security assessment and advisory services. This session will summarize the range of services and qualified firms under the contract and will describe Anne Arundel Community College’s (AACC) process for selecting a vendor to perform security audit services. We will also cover some of preparatory and implementation challenges in undergoing the security audit. Finally, representatives from several of the qualified firms will be available to answer questions during the session.

Concurrent Session III

Integrating PeopleSoft, Blackboard, and Microsoft CRM to build ‘STARS’: A Student Success Monitoring System
In this presentation, the authors describe a model labeled STARS, developed through the integration of PeopleSoft; Blackboard, and Microsoft CRM at Bowie State University. The authors formulate the hypothesis that the negligible outcomes derived from intervention efforts to enhance student success might be explained by a deficiency, not in theories and models per se, but rather in an incomplete operationalization of the models. To address this conjecture, the authors explain the existence of an information deficiency regarding the interventions, arguing that a robust and comprehensive strategy can only succeed with the support of technology by building integrated decision support systems.

Microsoft SharePoint: Over a Thousand Sites and Growing
In 2006,The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health implemented Microsoft SharePoint for use by all faculty, students, and staff. After running another portal solution since 2001, we have finally found a product that gives us the tools necessary to support the school's work. We will demonstrate some sites that have been created to facilitate collaborative student application reviews, research support, and various working group tasks. In addition, we have implemented some customized features that enhance the out-of-the-box features. To name a few: the integration of My Documents, shared drives, and the ability for external accounts to be created automatically with the appropriate level of security. As we look to the future, we plan to implement a SharePoint-based document management system. As part of this session, we will share with you our challenges as well as our successes with implementing SharePoint in an educational environment

Help Desk Panel
MEEC has established a contractual vehicle through which member institutions can procure Call Center/Help Desk service. This session will review the range of services and qualified firms under the contract. Also included in the discussion will be ways in which the agreement can be utilized by MEEC members. Come and hear the contract procurement officer and others discuss the use and usability of the agreement. Vendors who provide this service under the MEEC Call Center/Help Desk agreement will be asked to be in the audience to share appropriate experiences.

The need to wring maximum efficiency out of scarce network resources has made server virtualization the hottest technology in recent memory. New networks are taking this concept to the next level.

In the data center, stackable switches with “virtual chassis” technology are replacing cumbersome chassis-based approaches. At the edge, secure routers combine the security, routing and switching capabilities of stand-alone products into a single, easy-to-manage device. And that’s just the beginning.

Join us for an in-depth look at the new network where we’ll explore how these cost-effective approaches can help you:

• Simplify network architecture
• Deliver blazing performance and high-availability for less
• Reduce your hardware, management, power, and cooling costs
• Increase the flexibility and scalability of your network
• Secure critical network resources

This informative session will offer the latest solutions from Juniper Networks for discussion, and leave plenty of time for your questions.

McAfee User Group Meeting (12.2.10)

By working together, we can protect the vital information of students, teachers, and administrators - no matter where they are. With the increased portability of removable USB devices, even users with the best intentions can accidentally install crippling software that compromises vital systems. It is essential to protect your applications and your students.

McAfee® Device Control helps you monitor and restrict data copied to removable storage devices and media to keep it from leaving institutional control. It also gives you the tools you need to monitor and control how users copy data onto these devices - regardless of where they are.

With the importance of the internet, securing the web with acceptable policies and controls is essential. McAfee’s Web Filtering Module allows you to set and enforce policies for safe and effective web usage to ensure that appropriate resources are used and protected from malware.

Join the session to learn about the following:
• How to protect data no matter where the data is stored
• How to effectively manage USB and portable storage devices
• When to create and enforce appropriate web policies to protect networks against malware
• Why you get what you pay for - why free A/V is really free

Routine, systematic vulnerability scanning and remediation are foundational elements of any security program. After all, most breaches exploit well-known and easily corrected vulnerabilities. As organizations mature their security practices, vulnerability scanning programs also need to evolve. Quarterly or ad hoc scans using “point-and-shoot” scanners -- often followed by a frenzied crash remediation program – should be replaced with monthly, weekly, or more frequent scans supported by continuous remediation. However, without careful planning, such a transition can generate tremendous workload with little security or compliance benefit. This presentation will discuss how enterprise vulnerability management solutions differ from “point-and-shoot” scanners, and the characteristics of these tools that enable continuous scanning and remediation while dramatically reducing the labor investment required.

Build your own private cloud infrastructures from the data center to the corporate campus with Avaya Virtual Enterprise Network Architecture. This open virtualization solution helps dramatically simplify the design, deployment, and management of networks by enabling a network fabric within and between data centers and campuses. The virtual services fabric—based on Shortest Path Bridging—creates a multipath Ethernet network that relies on the Intermediate System-to-Intermediate System (IS-IS) protocol to dynamically build a topology between nodes.

Since provisioning is only required at the network edge, administrators can more quickly deploy new services. "Avaya's architecture greatly simplifies the deployment of vital business applications, potentially reducing delivery times by days or even weeks and taking human error out of the equation," says Mike Kincaid, Manager of Network Services and Telecommunications at UC Health. With Virtual Enterprise Network Architecture, the chance of an outage due to human provisioning errors—traditionally a significant cause of network downtime—can be virtually eliminated.

Additional benefits from this architecture include:
Add or turn on new services 25 times faster than traditional spanning tree networks, according to a 2011 Miercom report
Build the network core only once without redesign or reconfiguration
Deploy services wherever they are required, without constraints on the physical topology
Easily implement virtual machine migration, storage convergence, and business continuity/disaster recovery plans

Accelerating the Deployment of Virtualized Applications in the Data Center

Avaya Collaboration Pods are turnkey solutions consisting of virtualized server, storage, networking and management components all fine-tuned to deliver maximum performance of Avaya application solutions over the underlying data center infrastructure.

Windows Server 2012 Overview and Bringing Your Own Devices 12.11.12

Windows Server 2012 Overview and “Bringing Your Own Devices”
December 11, 2012 - Web Seminar

Backend computing infrastructure is going through a transformational shift impacting the entire IT ecosystem and this transformation is being driven by an exponential growth of devices used for smarter, more personalized applications, which in turn create an explosion of data and the need for more computing power. It is a new world of connected devices and continuous services, and it’s all powered by servers and the cloud.

Microsoft’s Windows Server 2012 is a cornerstone of the Cloud OS, providing our customers and partners with a modern platform for their applications and is the core offering for anyone building their own cloud, pubic, private or hybrid. Microsoft has put its unparalleled cloud experience into Windows Server 2012, making it the world’s first server that is “built from the cloud up”. Windows Server 2012 expands the definition of a server operating system from the single server up to the datacenter and out to the cloud, while also incorporating breakthroughs across advanced storage, software-defined networking, virtualization and automation. Windows Server 2012 delivers hundreds of new features that will help customers achieve a transformational leap in the speed, scale and power of their datacenters and applications.

Microsoft has seen a “consumerization of IT” and with that, a great shift with people bringing their own devices into the workplace. Students are also using their own devices to access managed data and applications within today’s educational enterprise. Expectedly, organizations must be mindful of how these devices and the data which is accessed are secured and managed. Come learn about BYOD strategies, what other educational organizations are doing to manage the proliferation of devices and what Microsoft offers to help.

Personalize Learning Through a More Pervasive Video Collaboration Approach 12.18.12

Join Alliance Technology Group, LLC for this informative web seminar

Tuesday, December 18th 2012
10:00 am to 11:00 am EST

Traditional video conferencing in education has gain strong acceptance yet has been challenged by its high cost, lack of ease of use, limited interoperability and limited availability. With the growing demand for online, hybrid and distance learning options, it is imperative that these challenges be addressed to allow school districts and higher education institutions to expand video-enable learning opportunities beyond the traditional seat based classroom. Now with the pervasive use of smart phones, tablets, laptops, net-books and other forms of mobile devices with trends showing that the average student carries 2-4 internet and video ready devices, the time is right to incorporate a more pervasive video-enable learning style to the pedagogy. If done correctly, video collaboration over these devices can become the launching point of your institution’s or district’s transformation.
This session will discuss a more cost effective approach to achieve a pervasive video-enabled learning strategy that will engage your students on a more personalized basis while seamlessly integrating with your institution’s or district’s Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) strategy. Presenting, archiving and re-broadcast, all key portions of curriculum delivery will be discussed from a BYOD context.

Join us for this dynamic 60 minute discussion.

Microsoft- ESPA and Student Option Overview - 1.8.13

Tuesday, January 8th, 2013 - 10:00 am to 11:00 am EST

Academic institutions everywhere are looking for ways to rein in the management of their licensing and looking for better and faster ways to support the constituencies across campus. The Enrollment for Server Platform – Academic (ESPA) offers educational customers a way to fix costs and license Microsoft’s server technologies in an easy to understand and manageable “all you can eat” licensing model. It is a simple and cost-effective solution for our academic customers looking for greater flexibility, scalability and easier license management. If your organization has a decentralized purchasing process, is trying to rein in the incremental costs of server deployments, needs better flexibility and scaling for seasonality or simply trying to assure compliance, you will want to learn more about this valuable Microsoft offering.

The Student Option
Educational organizations have long been licensing Microsoft’s productivity software for their staff, faculty and teachers. Many forward thinking academic clients have come to Microsoft, asking for a means by which they can extend that same productivity and capability to the students they teach. In response, Microsoft has created a licensing model called the Student Option. It allows students the ability to use and stay current on Microsoft Windows and Office. The result has been positive for students and organizations alike, improving standardization of tools in teaching and learning, increasing institutional value for your students and reinforcing your mission and message to help prepare students for the 21st Century workplace.

Daly - Considerations for High-Density WLAN Deployments - 1.16.13

Wi-Fi networks are seeing increased utilization and load across organizations in most
industries. High-density wireless networks are typically considered to be environments
where the number of client devices and required application throughput exceed the
available capacity of a traditional “coverage-oriented” Wi-Fi network design. In
these situations, even a well-designed wireless network that provides coverage at
good signal strength and SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) throughout the desired coverage
area is insufficient to ensure high performance due to inadequate capacity. The
limiting factor is available airtime. Since Wi-Fi relies on a shared and unbounded
medium (that is, the air), clients and access points must contend for available airtime
to transmit data.

This presentation outlines a set of simple principles that you can use as a basic guide
when designing your high-density network. This list of principles is not meant to be
comprehensive but rather a quick overview of the most important items to take into
account.

Enable Learning Anytime, Anywhere via Video Collaboration
Randy Weeter, AVAYA hosted by Alliance Technology Group

Configuring and Maximizing the iPad Classroom
Lisa Capan, CCBC and Darrow Neves, CCBC
Setting up an iPad classroom is not quite as 'plug-n-play' as one might think. In this session, we will discuss the trials, tribulations, and lessons learned at setting up an Apple iPad Classroom. During the presentation, a demonstration of maximizing the interactivity possibilities for faculty and students will be showcased.

Leveraging your Microsoft Assets
Jamie Bakert and Yanni Chryssomitis, Microsoft
Leveraging Your Microsoft Assets – Educational organizations everywhere are increasingly being asked to do more with less and to work with stagnating or even decreasing budgets. The Microsoft contract that MEEC has negotiated on behalf of its membership is comprehensive and oftentimes includes product functionality for which you are paying separate and extra license and maintenance fees. Please join your Microsoft account team and learn the details of everything that you have licensed and what you can be leveraging to help save your organization money. In this conversation, we will discuss:
• The Educational Desktop – Windows and Office
• The Enterprise CAL – access to the various server software suites, such as Windows Server, Exchange Server, Sharepoint and more
• MDOP – Desktop optimization and the ability to virtualize applications, desktops and even user profiles
• ExpressionsWeb and Visual Studio Professional studio suites
• Microsoft Roadmap – a discussion of products that are rapidly gaining traction in education and across all enterprises

Network Security Workshop 10 Things Your Next Firewall Must Do
Clint Beasley, Palo Alto Networks and Jim Rowland, Daly
Topics:
•Why the network firewall, which serves as the foundation of every organization’s security infrastructure, has been impacted by massive changes in the last few years
•How traditional stateful inspection firewall, even with a bunch of additional security appliances or blades like IPS, proxy, URL filtering, and DLP tacked on, is simply not effective in today’s application and threat landscape
•Learn why Gartner recognized Palo Alto Networks as a leader in the 2011 Magic Quadrant
While many vendors are beginning to promote next-generation firewall “capabilities,” their offerings do not address enterprise requirements for safe enablement of applications, high-speed integrated threat
prevention, and coverage for roaming users and devices.
You will learn:
•Why traditional firewalls are no longer effective
•The Top 10 requirements for your next firewall purchase
•How to evaluate vendors and build your test plan

Microsoft - Strategies for Mobile Device Management - 10.28.14

Tuesday, Oct 28 , 11:00 am to 12:00 pm

Microsoft and Mobile Device Management
Personal devices have made their way into the educational enterprise and that trend is only looking to increase over time. While this new trend is affording both educators and students the opportunity to become more productive, educational organizations face a new set of challenges and questions that come with these personal devices:
• How do I make sure that the device (and more importantly, my network) are safe and secure?
• Is our school or college legally responsible if access to unwanted sites and applications is granted?
• How do I make line of business applications available on these new devices to help with worker productivity?
• Am I to allow these devices to join my domain?

Microsoft will help uncover things to think about and will discuss different levels of solutions to help manage these scenarios. In this informative webinar, MEEC members will learn the following:

• How mobility is changing the way we work and the challenges it brings to IT.
• Microsoft’s view of People-Centric IT
• Overview of the Microsoft Enterprise Mobility Suite (EMS) including Microsoft Intune and Azure Active Directory Premium
• Demonstration of Microsoft Intune
• Q & A

Digital Signage - A Tool in Education - Daly - 2.18.15

With the “new” economy continuing to loom large it behooves us more than ever before to understand exactly what we are committing to when we invest our time and hard earned dollars in a project. Nowhere is this more of a truism than digital signage in the niche we all know as the education market. This seminar examines conventional wisdom and how it often relegates digital signage in education to a flat panel at the reception desk or for the more "creative" types a flat panel outside the auditorium, gym or perhaps inside the cafeteria. This course counters conventional wisdom and takes digital signage in education to a new, more evolved level with uses inside the classroom as well. It introduces Smart School technologies and how these can work to solve some of the problems we face in our overcrowded classrooms today.
Learning objectives:
Learn to think beyond conventional wisdom.
Learn what digital signage can do beyond an animated version of a static signage.
Learn how Smart School technologies can solve so many educational hurdles facing us today.

*Length of course: 1 hour
