They commit to volunteer 3-5 hours a week with a service site for a minimum of 30 hours over the course of the semester, and complete reflection activities along with their service. Then, students integrate this service experience into a course, just like they would a textbook or class reading.

The Service-Learning program of The Shriver Center provides service placements for students and registers them for the 096 Practicum. To learn about service placements for spring check out our Service Charts on The Shriver Center's website.

The following service-learning classes are offered this spring:

SOCY 396: Reflections on Community Service: A Sociological Perspective meets Monday 1-1:50pm. Students can take the class for 1, 2, or 3 credits and it is graded P/F. This class does not count toward general education requirements but it does count toward upper level general elective credits.

HONR 390: Reflections on Community Service satisfies the Honors College's applied learning requirement. This is an Independent Study course, which means there are no in-person class meetings; students complete the course on their own. It is 3 credits and graded P/F.

Call The Shriver Center at 410.455.2493 and set up a time to register for a Service-Learning placement and a class!

Do you seek to make a difference? Shriver Center sites are already filling quickly!

As a testament to the culture of civic engagement at UMBC, the Service-Learning Program at The Shriver Center is already experiencing a high volume of student interest for Spring 2011 to support the greater community through their respective talents and abilities. Some sites already have enough volunteers such as Educated Based Latino Outreach (EBLO) that partners UMBC students with children of Latino descent). MS Swim, which works with adults with multiple sclerosis at the local YMCA, only have a few more spots Fridays, 1-4pm (Sunday is full).

If you seek to make a difference through service to others, call (410) 455-2493 to set an appointment with a Service-Learning Coordinator. You can also come in for Walk-In hours Tuesday-Thursday (2/8-2/10) from 12-4pm. Energy Conservation and K-12 Outreach - NEW POWER Fellowships Available

Prior to the holidays, UMBC/The Shriver Center was awarded a one-year grant through Constellation Energy through their "Energy to Educate" program. POWER partners include UMBC Physics Professor Dr. Lynn Sparling, WeatherBug, the Albright Foundation, and two local schools, Federal Hill Preparatory School (Baltimore City) and Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Howard County), which are both within a 15 minute drive from campus.

This project involves the unique intersection of three areas: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education, Energy and Environmental Public Awareness, and Service-Learning. Using these areas, the POWER project seeks to teach 6th-8th grade students the basics about wind energy and other sustainable energy resources. Each grade level across schools will focus on a research question and will make presentations on their findings by the end of the semester. WeatherBug has installed weather monitoring stations at both of the schools to assist the students in their research. Selected UMBC students (Fellows) will deliver the science curriculum and help the students perform activities related to their research question.

There are 4 Fellowships available each semester, from Spring 2011-December 2011. Each Fellow will receive $500 per semester. There is also the opportunity to continue with the summer component of this project, which carries a separate stipend. Students will be enrolled in the 096 Service-Learning Practicum, and may also have the chance to receive credit for their involvement. UMBC students with majors in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (particularly in Physics and Environmental Science) and/or STEM Education are encouraged to apply.

Interested students should fill out the attached, brief questionnaire and submit it to Lori Hardesty either via email at lhardesty@umbc.edu or to The Shriver Center no later than Friday, January 28th, 2011 at 5 pm. The Shriver Center is located on the 1st Floor of the Public Policy Building, just past the elevators. Interviews will be scheduled immediately the week after (on or about February 1st-3rd), depending on the number of applications received. The hope is to do orientation training the week of 2/13 and begin implementation in the schools the week of 2/21.

Volunteers Needed for Baltimore City Computer Initiative

'Let's All Take Computers Home,' or L@TCH, is a program created from a partnership between a community organization in east Baltimore called, Historic East Baltimore Community Action Coalition (HEBCAC) and the Center for Community Technology Services(CCTS). The goal of L@TCH is to distribute a home computer to every Baltimore city student who does not have one. Those who work on this program believe that computers can help parents keep up to date on their child's progress in school while improving a child's home learning environment by providing them with a home learning center.

We are looking for volunteers who would be interested in leading computer training workshops for Baltimore families. We will train or coach volunteers to deliver 3 hour training sessions to small groups of parents and kids at various locations in Baltimore. We are working with five schools, at each school there will be three training workshops that will take place sometime between the end of November to February. We are asking each volunteer to, ‘adopt a school’ and if possible, lead all three training workshops at one location. The workshops would be on weekday evenings and/or Saturday mornings. The curriculum has already been written so the computer lesson is scripted. The focus of the lesson would be computer set-up and online safety. You do not have to be a tech geek to help us, we just need someone who knows a little bit about computers and is not afraid of public speaking! For more information visit our website: everyfamilyconnected.org

Individuals interested in volunteering please email devons@cctsbaltimore.org

Attention Rising Seniors! New Fellowship For Aspiring Teachers of Color

* Nearly half of the nation’s students (44 percent) are students of color, but the latest data show that just one of every six teachers (16.7 percent) is a teacher of color.
* Current trends indicate that, by 2020, the percentage of teachers of color will fall to an all-time low of 5 percent of the total teacher force, while the percentage of students of color in the system will likely exceed 50 percent.
* In urban and rural schools nationwide, as many of half of all African-American, Latino, and Native American students do not graduate high school in four years.
* As many as a third of students in the nation’s high-need schools have at least one or more teachers without even a minor in the subject she or he teaches.
* Study after study shows that the single most effective way a school can improve students’ academic achievement is to consistently provide well-prepared, committed teachers.
* Research also shows, overwhelmingly, that students of color perform better – academically, personally, and socially-when taught by teachers from their own ethnic groups.

The Shriver Living Learning Center (SLLC) is a Living Learning Community on the UMBC campus that has been engaged in service-learning on and off campus for nearly 10 years! Current SLLC students and alumni will reunite to celebrate and collaborate in service to our community on Saturday, March 27th, which is supported through The Shriver Center and the Office of Undergraduate Education.

In celebration of this event, Russel Toyota in Catonsville is generously sponsoring “Stuff a Sienna,” a book drive to benefit The Book Thing in Baltimore. The Book Thing’s mission is “to put unwanted books into the hands of those who want them.” Any books are acceptable (yes, even text books), but children’s books are especially wanted.

A 2011 Sienna will be featured starting Tuesday, March 23rd every day on The Commons Circle near Academic Services from 9am-5pm. The min-van will remain on campus in that location (9am-5pm) until the SLLC Reunion on Saturday, March 27th. Drop off your books on your way to class!

Russel Toyota staff will also be available to connect with you and your inner auto aficionado to talk cars on Wednesday, March 24th from 11:30-2pm! So come on over, chat with a Russel Toyota staff person, and bring that box of books that has been sitting in your basement!

On Saturday, April 10th, the 3rd Annual Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Conference will be held at Towson University. This exciting event originated at UMBC in April 2008, then moved to the University of Baltimore in April 2009, and Johns Hopkins University plans to host it in spring 2011. Such a collaboration of colleges and universities through the Baltimore Collegetown Network and the Maryland Campus Compact will result in great opportunities to network amongst other college students, staff, and faculty throughout Maryland through workshops, the Community Partner Fair, and lunch through topical discussions.

The Service-Learning Program at The Shriver Center at UMBC continues to serve on the planning committee after recognizing the resource that the UMBC community can provide, as well as learn from other peers in the capacity of service-learning and civic engagement. This year's theme "Planting Seeds of Service: Cultivating Civic Engagement" will engage the greatest number of participants (300+) and workshops (32) since its inception in 2008. Congressman Elijah E. Cummings will be the Keynote Speaker.

UMBC is represented in several ways:

- Yasmin Karimian and David Hoffman present "Re-Visioning Student Governments as Creators of Civic Agency Platforms"

- Ben Davis, Nathan Rehr, and Benjamin Hong present "Alternative Spring Break: Awareness Games Reflection"

- Jennifer Arndt Robinson and Joby Taylor present "Ethical Reflection for Seasoned Service Learners"

- Joby Taylor presents "Peace Follows Service: Service-Learning as a Path For Building a Culture of Peace in Baltimore"

There has been such a strong response from UMBC students, that we have decided to pay for ALL of UMBC students participating. Transportation will also be provided by Shriver Center staff. To register, go to www.towson.edu/plantingseeds

Volunteer to Keep the Chesapeake Bay Clean!

The Maryland Department of the Environment is inviting you to help maintain and improve the quality of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries! Volunteers will assist MDE in monitoring the amount of nonpoint source pollution entering Maryland waterways and the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Non-point source pollution is one of Maryland's largest environmental problems concerning waterways; it kills plants, decreases the amount of oxygen in the water, and makes the water all around less
habitable to any life form.

MDE wants you to help the Bay and its watershed by volunteering to reduce runoff pollution. This opportunity offers volunteers the chance to change how your government works for you, gives you insight into how a state enforcement agency operates, and allows volunteers to meaningfully help the Bay and its watershed.

For more information or to apply, contact Daniel Miller at 410-537-4480 or DJMiller@mde.state.md.us.

We mobilize college students to work in urban community clinics and provide low-income families in Baltimore with access to a wide variety of resources. We also work closely with doctors, nurses, lawyers, and social workers to provide patients with a holistic approach to health care that complements the care provided by health professionals in the clinical setting. UMBC, in partnership with St. Agnes Hospital, has launched a family-resource desk to connect families to community resources critical to their health, safety and economic survival.

To request a link to the online application system, email Brian Spendley at Spendley@projecthealth.org, with “Fall Application - UMBC” in the subject line and your first and last name in the email body. The application is due by Friday, September 11th 2009 by 5pm. In order to receive your link to the application in a timely manner, please email us no later than Thursday September 10th, 2009.
