Help Squash Bad Grades!

Join Baltimore SquashWise, a non-profit organization working to improve the opportunities available to students in Baltimore City Public Schools. Through the game of squash, BSW connects students to a program that provides them with an incredible support system they would otherwise lack in their regular education.

Volunteers are needed to provide 1 hour of tutoring and 1 hour of squash instruction for students who attend Booker T. Washington Middle School and the Baltimore Civitas School. No squash experience is necessary! Currently, the program has more squash instructors than tutors, so students who are able to provide regular, academic support are in high need.

Below is the schedule and times in need of volunteers. All sessions take place at the Meadow Mill Athletic Club:

- Wednesdays: 9am-11:30am & 3:15pm-5:45pm
- Fridays: 3:15pm-5:45pm
- Saturday: 1pm-3pm

For more information or to sign up to tutor, please contact Matt Skarzynski at matt@baltimoresquashwise.org or 443-682-7126 (office) and 410-294-3530 (mobile).

Be Part of Higher Achievement!

Higher Achievement is a non-profit organization that helps underserved middle-school students, referred to as “scholars”, improve their grades, attendance, and standardized test scores, culminating in acceptance to top high schools in Baltimore. During the scholars’ four years in Higher Achievement, they study social-justice oriented curricula; work with three mentors per week; self select enriching elective courses; and participate in academic contests, university stays, and field trips. Higher Achievement’s strong network of mentors is instrumental to the success of its program. Higher Achievement is currently recruiting mentors for the October launch of its After-School Academy in Baltimore.

GETTING INVOLVED

What: Mentors work with a small group of intellectually curious 5th and 6th grade scholars in either Math, Literature, or Seminar.
When: Mentors commit to working with three scholars for two hours a week during the school year, from 6:00 to 8:00pm.
Why: Higher Achievement provides significant support to its mentors, including scripted, structured, and easy-to-use lessons; an extensive orientation session; and ongoing support and training. Teaching experience is not necessary. Mentors bring their enthusiasm and commitment, and serve as positive role models to the scholars. In return for giving their time and effort, mentors receive the rewarding experience of making a lasting impact on a young person’s life.
How: Higher Achievement will hold an Information Session at UMBC on Wednesday, September 9th from 12-1pm in PUP 107 (conference room 107 on the 1st floor of the Public Policy building). If you are interested in becoming a mentor but cannot attend the session, apply online at www.higherachievement.org. We also work closely with doctors, nurses, lawyers, and social workers to provide patients with a holistic approach to health care that complements the care provided by health professionals in the clinical setting. Universities participating in Project Health Baltimore include the Johns Hopkins University and Loyola College in Maryland.

UMBC, in partnership with St. Agnes Hospital, has launched a family-resource desk to connect families to community resources critical to their health, safety and economic survival.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED
To learn more about this opportunity, contact us at mentorbaltimore@higherachievement.org or 410-752-7753.

Make $18-$20 Per Hour Tutoring Algebra at Baltimore City School

A very recent opportunity came up with a new Transformation School in Baltimore City, Friendship Academy of Science and Technology (FAST), in their first year of implementation. FAST is seeking immediate support for their 9th graders to prepare for the Algebra High School Assessments in May 2009. FAST currently serves 6th, 8th, and 9th graders and is based in East Baltimore.

This support can come in the form of small group work during the school day 8am-3:30pm or in an after-school setting from 3pm(starting a little early)-5pm. Tutors will need to be available for one two-hour session with FAST students and provide their own transportation. Keep in mind that FAST is 30 minutes from UMBC in East Baltimore. Multiple sessions with students are welcome, but a minimum of a 2-hour availability of direct support with FAST students is required (a solid 3-hour commitment when factoring in travel time).

A very substantial payment of $18-$20 per hour will be paid to Tutors for their support, which will be targeted March through the first week of May (with heavy concentration in April).

If you are interested, you should contact Lori Hardesty, Service-Learning Program Coordinator, K-16 Partnerships, immediately at (410) 455-2493 or lhardesty@umbc.edu to schedule a time to hear more about "next steps" and complete necessary paperwork.

For more Info on FAST, go to http://www.friendshipschools.org/home/content.asp?id=232&zZsec=our%20schools&mid=232&mSec=our%20schools

Dancers NEEDED! Help Local Youth Develop This Passion

In its second semester, this pilot program provided an after-school Dance Club for a local elementary school and was deemed a great success through the partnership of The Shriver Center, Tri-Churches Housing, Inc. (http://www.tchtoday.org) and Samuel F.B. Morse Elementary School. Last semester, the Terrific Tiger Dancers were formed through the support of several wonderful volunteers (a mix of Dance majors and non-Dance majors). Approximately 20 1st-5th graders met with these volunteers several times per week to learn African Dance and Hip Hop in preparation for the school-wide Thanksgiving Recital.

For the spring 2009 semester, we are expanding the outreach of this opportunity based on the great interest of the school:

- Monday/Wednesdays - 2:45-4:45 pm for Beginners
- Tuesdays/Thursdays - 2:45-4:45 pm for Advanced (many of the returners from fall 2008)

A Shriver Center van has been designated for use for this site. The times listed above includes the travel time (10-15 from UMBC) to and from UMBC.

Those interested do not need to be Dance majors. As mentioned, the Terrific Tigers enjoyed African Dance and Hip Hop, so that theme might continue for the spring.

If you have any questions and/or are interested, please contact Lori Hardesty at lhardesty@umbc.edu or (410) 455-2493.

Do You Love Your Major?

Do you want to spread the word about your major and get more people excited about it? Do you wish more people could truly enjoy their majors, like you do? We are currently organizing a service project where college students would travel to local schools and host a "major fair," where middle and high school students can walk around and talk to college students (such as yourself) about what exactly it means to be a particular major.

We want representatives from a diverse and varied fields ranging from anthropology to computer engineering. We are looking for undergraduate sophomores and juniors (with hopes to build this program in the next few years) to volunteer to help with this project. These volunteers should be passionate about their majors, and should be able to speak thoroughly to what being that major entails (what courses are required, what you can do with that major, etc.). If you are interested in helping out, please contact Richard Blissett at am32283@umbc.edu.

Yes, It's True - Project HEALTH Has Some More Openings!!!!

Project HEALTH seeks to break the link between poverty and poor health. Though national in scope, Project HEALTH takes a local approach to finding innovative solutions to the health care crisis. College students are mobilized to work in urban community clinics and provide low-income families in Baltimore with access to a wide variety of resources. Project HEALTH also works closely with doctors, nurses, lawyers, and social workers to provide patients with a holistic approach to health care that compliments the care provided by health professionals in the clinical setting. Project HEALTH is a national network with sites in Baltimore, Boston, New York, Rhode Island, Washington D.C., and Chicago. Universities participating in Project HEALTH Baltimore include the Johns Hopkins University and Loyola College in Maryland. UMBC, in partnership with St. Agnes Hospital, has launched a family-resource desk to connect families to community resources critical to their health, safety and economic survival. You can also see more about Project HEALTH at http://www.projecthealth.org/involved-volunteer

Info sessions will be held on:
> Monday February 2nd, 2009 from 12:00-1:00 PM in Commons 329 &

A Thanksgiving Message from the Shriver Center

Are you dreading that Thanksgiving conversation?

You know, the one that goes something like:

Family-member: So, what are you going to do next summer?

You: I don't know, probably the same thing I did last year.

Family Member: Well, with all the news about the economy, I don't think it's smart to put all your eggs in one basket. And you know you can't mooch off of us another year.

You: Stop bugging me! I just don't know where to begin!

And an awkward silence fills the room, ruining your delicious pumpkin pie.

Wouldn't you rather be able to say...

You: Well, I met with my Shriver Center coordinator and they helped me get my resume in good shape. They also showed me how to use UMBCworks to apply to positions. I have two offers already from Fortune 500 companies and I'm interviewing with 3 other organizations over winter break. While I haven't made up my mind yet, I have a lot of good choices. The economy may be down, but there is still a strong market for interns and I know I'm going to have a good experience that may even set me up for a fulltime job after graduation.

Call 410-455-2493 to make an appointment with the Shriver Center TODAY to start your path to a successful spring or summer internship and avoid Thanksgiving awkwardness.

Three myths about Internships, Research, and Co-ops

Three myths about Internships, Research, and Co-ops brought to you by your Shriver Center Coordinators at UMBC

Myth: The downturn in the economy means that no internships are available.

FACT: Interns are still in demand and will be where many organizations look to fulfill their fulltime recruiting needs. More and more companies report that they are using their interns as an effective way to fill their hiring needs. By participating in an internship you can get the inside track on the best opportunities. The Shriver Center has connections with hundreds of organizations where you can get your foot in the door (most paid). By getting your resume approved in UMBCworks, you will have access to them as well!

Myth: Most students don't have enough experience to make a compelling resume and get the best positions.

FACT: You're probably more competitive than you think - and the Shriver Center can help you develop a resume and interview skills that will make you stand out. The Shriver Center has a range of services just for UMBC students to help you standout from your peers and get the positions you seek. We specialize in working with students to transform your credentials from ordinary to extraordinary!

Myth: If you're going to graduate school, you don't need to do internships or research.

FACT: What will make your applications stand out is the ways that you have applied what you have learned inside the classroom in a practical setting. The Shriver Center isn't just for students preparing for the corporate world - UMBCworks has many opportunities for students interested in research and academia. Taking advantage of these opportunities now will help you be more prepared and qualified for graduate studies.

To take advantages of all of these opportunities and more, log onto UMBCworks and start applying today!

Teach for America

Of the 13 million children growing up in poverty, only half will graduate from high school. Those that do graduate will perform on average at an 8th grade level.

YOU can change this.

Teach For America is a national nonprofit trying to close the achievement gap between low- and high-income school districts. We hire candidates from all majors and backgrounds for two years, during which time they receive full salary and benefits, as well as student loan deferment and $9,450 in AmeriCorps grants to pay back student loans or pursue another degree. Our goal is to empower leaders to further develop their skills while working to give children in low-income communities an excellent education. After the corps, Teach For America alumni apply their leadership skills and experience to create change in all sectors using our network of alumni and our partnerships with over 100 graduate, medical and law schools and over 20 top employers, including GE, Google, JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and Wachovia.

Want to know more about Teach For America and how YOU can get involved?

Join us on Wednesday, November 19th at 7:30pm for an Information Session via conference call to hear from Teach For America alumni about their experiences with the program and the paths they’ve gone on to pursue. To listen in, dial (605) 990-0111 and access code 548752# when prompted.

National Student Partnerships

Looking for a spring 2008 service-learning placement? Come this Monday, November 19th at noon to Public Policy 107 to find out more information on National Student Partnerships (NSP).

NSP strives to mobilize student leaders to strengthen communities. Volunteers at National Student Partnerships (NSP) work one-on-one with low-income community members to help them search for housing, employment, public benefits, to create resumes and apply for jobs, to lend support. Students use their skills on the computer, searching the internet,
and utilizing the resources around them, to work with clients in finding answers in the social service system and in the community. Volunteers will receive resource and service training, but are not expected to have answers ready for clients or be the "expert." The volunteer-client relationship is founded on a common ground of searching together.

Volunteers are asked to commit to one, 2-4 hour shift per week, within the time frame of Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm. While volunteers' primary responsibility is to provide client service, there also exist many opportunities for leadership positions and other areas of work in the office. These include, but are not limited to, media relations, resource updating, agency visits, volunteer trainings on resources or special topics (e.g. immigrant services, civic involvement, etc.). Local Director positions may also be applied for in the spring.

Catholic Charities to Host Baltimore Premier of Award-winning Documentary Film

On November 14, 2007, Catholic Charities will host the Baltimore premier of LOST IN WOONSOCKET, a film about how kindness and hope can bring about miracles. Catholic Charities, Maryland’s leading private provider of services for people in need, and Baltimore native John Chester, director and executive producer of the award-winning documentary, will debut the film at 6:30 p.m., following a 5:30 p.m. reception, at the Walters Art Museum. Harold A. Smith, Executive Director of Catholic Charities, says: “LOST IN WOONSOCKET reveals how small acts of compassion can change lives. Maybe yours. In this land of riches, there is a critical need for people to get involved—even in small ways such as mentoring or volunteering to teach a class—to change the world one person at a time.”

LOST IN WOONSOCKET is a story full of hope, kindness, and the painful reality of human frailty. It chronicles a group of filmmakers from Random 1, an A&E Network television series co-created in 2005 by John Chester and Andre Miller, as they began a bold humanitarian experiment roaming around the country looking for perfect strangers who needed help. What they didn’t expect was to stumble upon a tent in the woods outside of Woonsocket, Rhode Island, containing two men who had been missing from their families for 13 years. It was a discovery with far-reaching implications that would prove to be one story for which they had no real control. The film goes way beyond what the TV series was permitted to show and explores the profound circumstances that brought this awe-inspiring journey to a surprising end.

The filmmakers are challenged to look beyond right and wrong and are forced to make decisions based upon consequences as they face once-in-a-lifetime decisions that could change lives forever.

The two men in the woods are Mark and Normand. Both are extreme addicts who have forged a strong bond of friendship. Both are about to be shocked by the power of kindness.

Up close and unflinching in its raw honesty, there are moments of pathos, humor, and grace. This beautifully shot documentary examines the rush people get from helping one another, the ceaseless struggle against addiction, and the belief that compassion still exists in modern society. According to John Chester: “You’ll never look at strangers the same way again. I also believe the film captures a simple example of how we all might take part in changing the world…through individual involvement.”

At the conclusion of the film, John Chester will conduct a brief question and answer session. Catholic Charities has arranged for a special surprise appearance by one of the film’s star subjects. Hal Smith will describe how Catholic Charities can facilitate getting involved in simple ways to help men on the long road to self sufficiency.

Tickets are $10 and are available by contacting Renee Baker at (410) 547-5329 or rbaker@cc-md.org This is an intimate screening and seating is limited. The film has received standing ovations at sold-out screenings across the country. PLEASE NOTE: LOST IN WOONSOCKET is for mature audiences and contains strong language.

Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Baltimore welcomes and serves people of all faiths who are in need. The agency serves over 160,000 individuals each year in addition to a providing a quarter million meals to those who are hungry. The agency website is www.cc-md.org

Looking for a spring 2008 service-learning placement? Come this Monday, November 19th at noon to Public Policy 107 to find out more information on National Student Partnerships (NSP).

NSP strives to mobilze student leaders to strengthen communities.

College Night Service Position

The Choice Program is a mentoring and monitoring program for youth (ages eight to eighteen) in need of supportive services. Choice is a holistic program that seeks to build self-sufficiency in youth and their families by providing intensive case management support and links to community services.

Tutoring is a very important component of Choice because school represents a significant area of difficulty for many clients on several levels. To address the academic needs of youth in Choice, UMBC tutors gather two nights a week (Monday and Wednesdays, 5-8pm) to provide tutoring and mentoring to the youth who visit the campus for academic support. The youth are engaged for 3 hours each evening; 1 hour is allotted for eating in the dining hall, 1 hour for one-on-one tutoring with a UMBC college student, and 1 hour for a recreational or educational-focused activity.

As most Choice clients have difficulty succeeding in the traditional school environment, College Night gives them a chance to receive individualized, positive attention from a caring tutor in a laid back setting.

As a college student, you have found ways to succeed academically and obviously recognize the value of education as a means to assure your future. Choice clients can benefit from your experience and knowledge in this area!

The Choice Program is seeking energetic and committed people to serve as tutors. It is a time commitment of 6 hours per week throughout the semester.

Responsibilities Include:
-Providing one-on-one tutoring on Monday and/or Wednesday evenings, from 5-8pm.
-Monitoring and participating in recreational activities after tutoring
-Abide by attendance policies regarding absences or late arrivals
-Availability for contact via email or phone regarding announcements and changes to tutoring schedule
-Thinking outside of the box to make tutoring a fun experience!

If you are interested in being involved in this unique opportunity, please contact Michael Jenkins at mjenk1@umbc.edu
